POST FALLS - Great weather equals great times on the track.
Whether it be in North Idaho, eastern Washington or in Boise, the Lake City High boys relay teams in the 4x100 and 4x200 meters have been great - no matter the conditions.
And it got contagious during the District 1 All-Star Championships on Thursday afternoon at Post Falls High.
Eight meet records, six on the boys side, were broken on an 80-degree day.
"All in all, there was some pretty good marks," Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. "And the weather didn't hurt us any. It was nice to have some good weather and get a chance to run."
In addition to record-breaking wins in the 4x100 and 4x200, Lake City also won the 4x800 relay in 8:28.08 and senior Scott Cummings tied the meet record and broke the school pole vault record at 14 feet, 6 inches.
"Quite simply, Scott Cummings is the best pole vaulter that's been at Lake City," Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. "Period. Hands down. He's done this three weeks in a row, works hard and deserves it."
As far as the relays, experience has mattered.
"The biggest thing is we've got a ton of seniors, which we haven't had in recent years," Reed said. "We've had some seniors, but this year, we've got a solid core of six of them, and it's just given us some depth. Not only with the boys being more mature, but they've got more experience now because a lot of them have done it for three or four years."
Seniors Chris Baker, Nathan Newby, Tanner Horton, Rhet Damschen, Kirk McKenzie and Rikki McCaw, and junior Jerry Louie-McGee have all pitched in on either the Lake City 4x100 or 4x200 relay teams this year.
"It's nice," Baker said. "Because at some meets, if you're not feeling up to it, or just feeling dead tired, there's always somebody willing to work harder to get the job done."
The 4x200 team of Baker, Horton, Louie-McGee and Newby set a meet record of 1 minute, 30.32 seconds on Thursday. Louie-McGee, Newby, McCaw and Baker teamed to win in 1:28.1 at the Pulse Invitational on April 11 at Centennial High in Boise.
They currently hold the fastest time in the event in the state, two seconds faster than Idaho Falls with a 1:30.13.
"Both timing and having nice weather have had something to do with it," Reed said. "When we ran our best time of the year at the Boise meet, the weather was nice and it was great competition. The guys stepped up to that and hopefully that wasn't the peak."
The previous District 1 all-star meet record was 1:31.20 set by Sandpoint in 2003.
Lake City's 4x100 team has the second fastest time in the state at 42.93, nine-tenths of a second off Rocky Mountain's leading time.
"It's a lot of fun," Louie-McGee said. "We just come out and have a good time and run. We're just all friends out here running."
"We've been working hard out here and done a lot of work on our fundamentals," Baker said. "Fundamentals are a big part of our success and our commitment is really big."
Even after finishing in a record time, Baker wasn't satisfied with his performance.
"We're always trying to get better," Baker said. "Even back there (during the race), I didn't pass the baton as well as I have been in practice. We're always working on the fundamentals, which is a big key for us."
Coeur d'Alene's 4x800 relay team of Krista Story, Jaycee Rade, Noelle Ball and Kara Story also set a meet record in 10:00.89. Coeur d'Alene junior Victoria Goetz broke the 400 record in 58.94.
Lake City's girls won the 4x200 in 1:44.16, which is also the fastest time in the state.
"We had some outstanding individual and relay performances," Reed said. "We had so many kids that performed outstanding. I think it showed our depth and was really a team effort. We're in a great position for next week and the following week. We're feeling good now, but none of it counts yet. Next week, it will."
Sandpoint senior Sam Levora, who has signed with Washington State, won the boys 1,600 in 4:16.85, breaking the previous record held by Bonners Ferry's Forrest Braden by three seconds.
Logan Feasline of St. Maries won the discus with a throw of 175 feet, 4 inches, 15 feet further than the previous record by Austin Funk of Post Falls.
