ST. MARIES - Tyson Truscott hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning, helping the St. Maries Lumberjacks beat the Orofino Maniacs 7-6 in the second game of a Central Idaho League doubleheader on Friday afternoon at City Park.
Earlier, Orofino beat St. Maries 14-5 to clinch the league title. The Lumberjacks would have won the CIL with a sweep.
"It was definitely nice to get the split today," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "We've got some things to clean up before districts and need to shore up our defense."
In the 2A District 1-2 tournament at Orofino, the host Maniacs will face No. 4 seed Kendrick in the opening round Monday at 4 p.m., followed by No. 2 St. Maries (13-3, 6-3 CIL) against No. 3 Grangeville (10-6, 5-4) at 6.
"Districts is really anybody's game," Tefft said. "We need to make sure we pitch well, play better defense and get timely hitting."
Chase Truscott hit a three-run home run in the first game for St. Maries, which won 2 of 3 games against Orofino (7-2 CIL) during the regular season.
Tanner Schwartz had three RBIs in the first game for Orofino, which took advantage of six St. Maries errors.
"I was hoping we'd have a better effort defensively," Tefft said of the opener. "But they're a tough team offensively. They really hit Tyson hard and we dug into a hole really early and couldn't get out of it."
