Fast day on cold track

WHITEFISH — Nipped at the finish line in the 100-meter hurdles, Rhiannon Sturgess made sure it didn’t happen later in the day during the 300 hurdles.
Sturgess started strong and went on to win that race with ease, posting a time of 46.86 at the 19-team ARM Invitational track and field meet Saturday.
Phoebe Guercio of Whitefish was second, 48.04.
“The last 100 (meters) felt really good to me,” the Flathead senior said.
“I wasn’t dying. I had more energy than I usually do.”
It was also a good way for her cap off a long day that featured off-and-on rain showers and temperatures in the low 40s. That made for some testy conditions for the athletes.
It did not rain, however, for her last race.
“I tried to stay warm as often as I could,” she said.
She also took a 20-minute nap in the Flathead team tent between her events.
“You really have to push yourself,” she said of the 300 hurdles.
“That’s why I like it. That race has more to do with determination than it does form.”
Sturgess finished sixth at state last year in the 300 hurdles. She has already qualified for state this year in both hurdle races by bettering the state qualifying time.
“Not my best (time), but I’m not too mad about it,” she said of Saturday’s 100 race.
“I got edged out at the end. I didn’t finish as strong as I would have liked.”
Hailey Phillips of Plains had the winning time 15.52. Sturgess was second in 15.63.
Sturgess says her times in both events this year are faster than those she posted in 2013.
“Way better,” she said.
“Not doing that (long jump and triple jump) this year (helps).”
She’s also injury free. Last season she had to deal with shinsplints.
“I’m trying to give my body a break,” she said.
“I miss jumping, but I know it’s for the best. The hurdles are my bread and butter.”
Sturgess, who plans to pursue a career in nursing, has signed a national letter of intent for track at Carroll College. She will receive a partial scholarship for athletics and academics.
Glacier swept the team titles with the girls scoring 143 and the boys 150.
Whitefish’s girls and boys were second with 93 and 92 totals, respectively.
The Columbia Falls girls were fourth, 64 1/3, with Flathead fifth, 48.
The Flathead boys were third, 76, and Columbia Falls placed sixth, 22.
Individually, Whitefish senior Marlow Schulz had a sensational day. She swept the sprints, winning the 100 (12.69), 200 (25.87) and 400 (1:00.17).
She also anchored both winning relay teams for Whitefish.
Glacier senior Evan Epperly nearly matched that by winning the 200 (22.85) and 400 (51.54). He finished second (11.13) in the 100 behind teammate Logan Jones (10.93).
Epperly also ran the first leg on the Wolfpack winning 400 relay.
Winning two events were Bailey Smith of Glacier, 800 (2:27.33) and 1,600 (5:24.62), and Silas Hasselbrook of Missoula Loyola, 110 (14.97) and 300 (41.44) hurdles.
Only one meet record was broken. Lacey Waid of Havre cleared 10-6 to win the girls pole vault. The old mark was 10-0, set by Ketti Wilhelm of Columbia Falls in 2009.
