COEUR d'ALENE - Colton Gable of Coeur d'Alene shot a two-over-par 74 to earn medalist honors at the 5A Region 1 tournament at the Coeur d'Alene Golf Club, and help the Viking boys qualify for state as well.
The Lewiston (312) and Coeur d'Alene (316) boys teams will advance to the state 5A tournament, which will be held on Monday and Tuesday at Highland Golf Course in Pocatello.
"What was really great was the boys were kind of a fourth seed going in," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "They played well. Bryce (Volking, who shot 75) and Colton came through big time. Without that, we're on the outside looking in. Those two seniors came to play."
Lake City's Jake Vetsch and Kenny Dodge, who finished in a three-way tie for third with 77s, qualified for state as individuals.
Gable shot a 1-under 35 on the back nine, and Volking shot 36.
Post Falls finished third (327) and Lake City came in fourth (330).
Joseph Glenn led Post Falls with a 79.
In the girls tournament, Coeur d'Alene shot a 358, beating Lewiston by 50 strokes. Both teams will advance to state.
Post Falls' girls shot a 446 and Lake City had a 460.
The individual title went to the Bengals' Sammi Jo Spring, who won with a bogey on the fourth hole of a sudden death playoff against Allison Duffin of Coeur d'Alene, after both golfers shot a score of 81 over 18 holes.
"It was good for her to be in that situation as a sophomore," Duncan said of Duffin.
Lake City freshman Emily Dodge, who shot 88, qualified as an individual.

Lakeland girls win, boys upset,
Bayley qualifies
SANDPOINT - The Lakeland girls won and qualified to advance to the 4A state tournament, but the boys team finished second and was upset by Sandpoint at the Elks Golf Club and will not advance to state.
"Our girls have won all year long and they competed well today," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "I'm proud of our girls. We (the boys) struggled. We had a rough day and it's one of those days where we struggled on the course. We played well most of the year. we didn't play well enough to beat them."
The Hawks girls, who will play Monday and Tuesday in the state tournament at Twin Falls Municipal Golf Course in Twin Falls, shot a 446. Moscow finished second with a 459 and Sandpoint had a 569.
Haley Rotchford shot a 96, followed by Siera Tingey, who finished with a 104.
Lakeland's boys shot a 334 and finished second to Sandpoint, which shot a 323. Moscow had a 377.
Sandpoint's boys advanced to state for the first time since 2007.
"It was unbelievable. They've (Hawks) beaten us every match, the boys just came together and are peaking at the right time," said Bulldogs head coach Tom Tharp, lauding the play of (David) Currie. "The key was David, in his second match back from an elbow injury. He kept real calm out there, went into cruise control and took it one shot at a time."
Derek Bayley led Lakeland with a 73 and qualified for state, unable to use his length on a shorter course that emphasizes accuracy over distance.
