RATHDRUM - Lakeland High junior Alyssa Adams danced her way to winning the Lakeland Distinguished Young Woman scholarship Saturday.
Adams won $600 for being named the event's overall winner, plus earned $150 for winning the scholastics portion, $100 for self-expression and $100 for fitness.
Adams advances to the state competition at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene Nov. 6-8. The winner of that contest moves on to the national finals in Mobile, Ala., in summer 2015.
The first alternate was Amanda Gravelle, who won $300 and an additional $100 for the talent category.
The second alternate was Kaidan Kelsey, who won $200, plus $100 for the interview category.
"This year's group of young women were amazing," said Debbie Waddell, who helps organize the Lakeland program and serves on the DYW state board.
"The judges obviously had a very difficult job selecting only one to represent the other nine at the state competition. The audience definitely saw a great performance by all 10."
Kathleen Olsen earned $100 for winning the Spirit of DYW category that is voted on by the participants.
Others who competed included Danielle Linehan, Jordyn Anderson, Alexis Schuitt, Sierra Tingey, Morgan Braton and Haley Rotchford.
The theme of the event was "The Roaring 20s." Jennifer Bassett and Nel Hubbard were program directors.
