Gordy Ormesher is a Democratic primary candidate for Kootenai County Treasurer.
He said he's running for the position because, "They didn't have anyone else running. People need a choice."
Ormesher said he was already running for precinct committeeman when he decided to throw his hat in for the treasurer's job.
"It's a different direction for public service after serving as a firefighter," Ormesher said.
He said he believes his 33 years of fire-fighting experience will serve him well in the treasurer's office, if elected.
"Making decisions quickly, the correct decision, that's probably one of the greatest attributes I have," Ormesher said. "That's what firefighters do, and we do it out in the field, where it's life and death...I think everyone should be a firefighter, for at least a couple of years."
If elected, he said he'll focus on fiscal responsibility, and before making changes, he'll look at the trends and practices working elsewhere.
Ormesher said he'll practice the same philosophy he did as an emergency medical technician: "cause no more harm."
"Just because you aren't doing something, that doesn't mean it's the right plan," he said. "Sitting tight might be the best thing to do."
Throughout his career, Ormesher said he learned a lot about dealing with people, about helping them.
"I think that's what public service is all about," Ormesher said.
