Janet Callen is a Democratic primary candidate for Kootenai County Treasurer.

"I'm running because I believe that the position deserves a candidate that has the skills and capabilities to do the job right," Callen said.

Callen thinks she fills that bill.

The Coeur d'Alene resident is a retired certified public accountant and former Internal Revenue Service agent.

"I have some pretty good skills at recognizing things that aren't quite right," Callen said.

Safeguarding the county funds is one of the greatest challenges Callen believes she'll face, if elected.

She said she has heard another candidate's claims that the current county treasurer is being too conservative with the county funds.

Callen said that's not necessarily a bad thing.

"We should be careful with the county funds," she said.

If elected, she said she will take a hard look at the way the county dollars are being invested, and determine if changes should be made.

"This isn't our own personal money," Callen said.
