MOSES LAKE — About 25 students from Larson Heights Elementary hit the street Wednesday morning as part of “Bike to School Day.” Principal Diana McFaul and three teachers rode along.

Bike to School is a national event, Larson PE teacher Pam Tunstall said. This is the first year Larson students have participated, she said.

Tunstall said she heard about the program from Louis Logan of the Trail Planning Team, who suggested the ride would be a way to promote physical fitness. He wanted to show kids that bike riding could be a lifetime activity, Logan said.

Larson students are learning about bike safety in PE class, Tunstall said, so riding to school seemed like a good way to reinforce the lessons.

Kids with training wheels, kids with Mohawk bike helmets, kids with pink bikes and black bikes got together in Doolittle Park and rode to school. The Safe Kids Grant County Program received a grant to provide 20 bike helmets to participants who didn’t have helmets or whose helmets didn’t fit anymore.

Bike to School is an outgrowth of Walk to School Day and was started in 2012, according to the organization’s website. It’s held in conjunction with National Bike Month.
