PARADE: Thanks to all who showed Loyalty

On behalf of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Post 1675, I would like to thank all who participated and attended our 41st Loyalty Day Parade.

The community patriotic spirit was overwhelming. Thank you for supporting our servicemen and women. The VFW Post and Ladies Aux are a nonprofit organization and one of the reasons we are able to provide so many services to veterans and their families, and provide so many community support programs, is because of the generous donations of time, effort and money from the entire community. Thank you so much.

We want to thank our dignitaries; Members of the Marine Corps led our parade flying the colors high; Troy Garrett, a U.S. Navy veteran was chosen as the Grand Marshal - he was driven in a bright yellow convertible owned by Ron Boger and driven by Bonnie Slater; Mr. VFW, Don Doney is a U.S. Navy veteran and Mrs. VFW Irma Doney, a Ladies Auxiliary member for 45 years, in a green convertible, owned and driven by Jerry White; Mrs. Poppy is Arnie Strange, a 6-year-old first-grader attending Silver Hills Elementary, she will be riding our float in all the Valley's parades this year. The float was pulled by Post 1675 Commander Bob McKay.

Additional Loyalty Day honors go to "Silver Valley Super Stars," our Valley's Special Olympics Teams, thanks for their help and devotion to the Post, Auxiliary and Community. Special thanks go out to Stein's Family Market in Osburn and KWAL Radio. Special guests this year were the Blazen Divaz - what a show they gave, all along the parade route; hope we can have them every year, what a show ladies!

Thank you Osburn Police Department for the escort and traffic control, and Silver Hills Elementary School for the use of their parking lot. The bike winner was Hannah Sheldon, thanks for participating. Thank you parade judges, Esther Capparelli, Julie Robbins, Carol Reynolds, Donna Sheppard, Jerry White and Jim Hayman; Registrars Jeanie Dehart and Tracy Scavland. Thanks to Jim McFeeley for handing out the bike tickets.

Thank you all Silver Valley Mayors for signing the Mayor's Proclamation for Loyalty Day. We couldn't make it without our hamburger concessioners, Ben and Monica Sheppard, who worked long and hard all day supplying the best burgers, hot dogs and sausage dogs this side of the Rockies and their helpers, Peggy White, Wanda Goldade, Ninette and Chuck Reitz, Keisha Oxendine and Trudy Rose.

Cash prizes were provided by the Post and Auxiliary, and the winners were: Float-Wallace Baseball; Horse Group-Easy Riders-4H (Shanyla Nelson, Tiffany Gardner, Elizabeth Scott, Megan Ferguson, Maria Ferguson, Shelby Mitchell, Hailey Doty, Leslie Stanley - Leader, Sharon Nelson and Jennifer Ferguson - parents, in pickup on pooper scooper duty David Scott and Megan O'Donnell; Best Dressed Adult - Sally Holtz; Marching Group - Blazen Divaz; Adult Group - Wallace Lady Elks; Anything Unique - Osburn Ubrary (Gail Rowe); Decorated Motor Bike Unusual - Jerrick Ireland (Ron's Mechanical); Motor BikelATV - Diana Smith; Decorated Car - Hazard County Sheriff Roscoe Car; Classic Car - Waters.

We owe a big debt of thanks to our parade organizers: Julie Robbins, Esther Capparelli, Bob McKay and Joe Wallace; we worked together as a team and completed this project with great success, thank you all. Please forgive if we have missed anyone. Just one last addition. Veterans groups everywhere are asking that the community wear red, every Friday; this small gesture is done to honor, support and respect our U.S. troops who are currently serving. See you next year!

KESLER: Family now fans of area

Cole Kesler's grandfather, Paul Weenig, and his family used to live in Coeur d'Alene and he also played basketball for the 1958-59 team when it was called North Idaho Junior College. Weenig is holding the ball in the center front.

To the city of Coeur d'Alene and North Idaho College Basketball,

We wanted to thank you for the hospitality and the privilege it was to visit your community over the past several months. Our third son is on the NIC basketball team and has had a wonderful experience during his first year of college.

There are so many to thank, and I'm sure I will miss a few, but here are some of the great people we now call friends and the fun places we visited and would recommend to both the locals and anyone else visiting your area.

First is a huge thanks to NIC, the coaches and all of the athlete's and teammates. Coach Jared Phay (he will be missed as he moves to CSI), Corey Symons and Thane Jackson run an amazing program and truly care for their players. Let's not forget the "Voice of the Cards" - Richard A. Haugen.

We met many fun people at the games like the soccer players who painted their bodies and jeered the other teams with chants of "SpongeBob SquarePants" and many other creative taunts. Larry the mailman (he delivered mail to the Weeing family many years ago when they lived in Coeur d'Alene - Cole's grandfather who also played basketball in 1958-1959). Special thanks to the players host families and the boosters that we saw at every game. The Wheelock's (Cole's host family), the Paul's, the Brennan's and so many more supports.

We love food and finding new restaurants and enjoyed eating at these places and many more: Herbie's Deli, Angelo's, The Bistro on Spruce (Valentine's Day dinner), Roger's (our first stop in Coeur d'Alene), The Garnet Cafe (amazing), Michael D's, Capone's, Fort Ground Grill, Pepe Caldo Pizzeria (great skateboard collection), and who can ever forget eating a Gooey (or two) from the Dockside Restaurant.

The guys at Perfection Tire (and a sponsor of the Cardinals) gave us great service installing four new tires on a snowy day when they were slammed. For getting our son's car back in alignment after he performed a 180 on a slick road. They also repaired one of the tires for free several months later.

A very special thanks to the Reichner family for making the connection with Coach Phay, adopting our son, taking him on your family vacation, becoming an uncle to their four beautiful girls, letting us stay at their home on many occasions and especially the packed house with three families during New Year's. There aren't enough words to express our thanks for everything you have done for our family.

To say the least, we have become fans of your part of the world and look forward to visiting again in the future. If you are ever in Laguna Beach look us up.

All our best,

THE KESLER FAMILY: Keith, Shirlyn, Christian, Tyler, Cole, Paige and Beck
