Blocked culvert floods Sun Road section

Glacier National Park closed access to most of Going-to-the-Sun Road near Apgar on Saturday due to runoff and debris that blocked a culvert under the road.

“There was lots of snowmelt and debris,” park spokeswoman Denise Germann said. “It filled a culvert and we just had a lot of water and debris.”

That pushed debris and water over the road’s surface about two miles beyond the foot of Lake McDonald.

The road was closed at about 8 a.m. and the cleanup took most of the day, with the road reopening at about 4:30 p.m.

Germann said Saturday was rainy in the park so it wasn’t as busy as it could have been during a fair-weather weekend day.
