OSBURN - A Post Falls couple reported missing Sunday called their family from St. Regis, Mont., on Monday to let them know they were safe.

Ray Blaise Koep, 70, and his wife, 66-year-old Suzi Koep, were last seen Sunday morning at their home in Post Falls. Search efforts were focused in Shoshone County, where, according to a press release, the couple often went for drives on river roads.

Shoshone County Sheriff Mitch Alexander said a deputy and the Koeps' son spent most of Sunday night searching for the couple. Throughout the day Monday, three search and rescue teams, Alexander and Undersheriff Rod Plank combed the Coeur d'Alene River area.

"It's a huge area to try and search," Alexander said. "But they ended up getting stuck outside Avery instead."

The couple was driving from Avery to St. Regis on Sunday when their truck became high-centered in snow, according to police.

Unable to dig themselves out of the snow, the couple spent the night in their truck. On Monday morning, they were able to free the truck, and when they arrived in St. Regis, they called family, Post Falls Police Captain Greg McLean said.

"They're real fortunate," Alexander said. "Especially down in that area, it could be a long walk out. You never know if somebody is going to drive by or not."

Blaise formerly worked as a Post Falls firefighter, at the Kootenai County jail and as a school bus driver for the Post Falls School District. Suzi retired as a Post Falls Police dispatcher.

The couple didn't suffer any injuries and Blaise did OK without his diabetes medication, police said.

"They are home safe and doing well," said McLean, who visited with the couple after they returned to their Post Falls home.

The couple didn't have cell phone coverage where they became stuck.

"I chastised them that, from now on, they need to tell their family where they're headed," McLean said. "No one realized that they'd be in the Avery area. We thought they'd be headed to the Coeur d'Alene River area, where they have been known to go to before."

Alexander added that this is the second report of missing people his agency has responded to since Friday.

On Saturday night, an older couple got stuck in snow on a forest road in Kootenai County and walked out into Shoshone County. They ended up on foot on Forest Road 209.

"My deputies found them at five in the morning, soaked and freezing," Alexander said.

With the temperatures warming up and more people wanting to recreate in the mountains, Alexander said it's not uncommon for his office to receive reports of cars stuck in snow.

"We encourage people to be prepared and let others know where they are going," Alexander said. "Just because there isn't any snow down here doesn't mean there's not any snow up in the mountains still."
