Lakeland High senior Derek Bayley shot a 2-under 66 and is in second place after the first day of the 4A boys tournament Monday at Twin Falls Municipal Golf Course.

Hunter Ostrom of Bishop Kelly shot a 65 on the 5,505-yard, par-68 course for the lead heading into today's final round.

Starting on the back nine, Bayley was 2-under after five holes. He airmailed the 15th green for a double bogey, then fell to 1-over before battling back to 2-under, leaving a 10-foot eagle putt just short on 7 (his 16th hole).

Under Idaho's state format, individual qualifiers (not on teams) go out early, and the top teams tee off late. Bayley will tee off at 8:40 a.m. MDT, nearly two hours before Ostrom.

"He's primed to be in the right place," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "He goes out early, and the other kid goes out late, Derek just has to go out there and post a score and see what happens."

Three-time defending champion Twin Falls shot 279 and leads Bishop Kelly by 11 strokes. Sandpoint is in seventh out of eight teams.

Lakeland's girls shot 422 and are in sixth place out of seven teams. Bishop Kelly, winner of the last two state titles, shot 326 on Monday and leads second-place Twin Falls by 47 strokes.

"It's really not a bad course," Maddy said. "It's in great condition, the greens are super fast. Some holes play short, but there's nothing to complain about the course."

Tournaments in all four classifications conclude today with another 18-hole round.
