MOSES LAKE - Staring at a 5-0 deficit after the top of the first against league rival Wenatchee, Moses Lake didn't blink.

The Chiefs answered with a 12-run inning, punctuated by seven runs scored with two outs.

"It was one of them freak innings," head coach Dave Gregory said. "Peyton (Ries) was actually pitching really and then she pitches a pretty good pitch then a bloop just barely over the third baseman's head and then another bloop then an error. We had two or three errors in that first inning."

After a first inning that saw 17 runs scored between the two teams, the rest of the game was slightly more pedestrian.

Wenatchee tacked on one more run in the second that was once again answered by five Moses Lake runs in the same inning. With the scoring barrage over, the Chiefs cruised to a 17-6 win in the opener.

Vanessa Rodriguez, Tressa Radach and Alyssa Balderas all homered and combined for 11 RBIs.

Ries pitched five innings, giving up six runs (four earned) and striking out two batters.

Moses Lake (11-1, 13-3) found its defense in the nightcap and shut out the Panthers, 5-0.

The Chiefs scored early again, pushing four across in the first inning before notching one more run in the fifth.

Skinner recorded 11 strikeouts and gave up three hits. The tandem of Ries and Skinner has been sensational in league play. Skinner and Ries has an ERA of .499 and 1.127, respectively.

Moses Lake will attempt to clinch the CBBN league title Tuesday at home against Eisenhower. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Moses Lake baseball drops two

WENATCHEE - Moses Lake ended its regular season with two road losses to Wenatchee with both games ending 6-4.

The Chiefs (12-3, 16-4) led in both contests but were unable to stay in front of the Panthers.

Jaime Vela paced Moses Lake in the opener with two hits and one RBI. Chase Tunstall pitched six innings and recorded two strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Ryan Pena led Moses Lake with two hits and two RBIs. Tyson Karstetter pitched 5 2/3 innings and struck out five batters.

Moses Lake will play for the district championship May 17 at home.
