SPIRIT LAKE - A 29-year-old Spirit Lake woman was arrested for possession of methamphetamine Monday after police and medics responded to a medical call concerning her grandmother.

Jennifer Rice was booked into the Kootenai County jail for felony possession of a controlled substance after meth was found inside her purse.

"She voluntarily allowed officers to look to see what was inside her purse," said Spirit Lake Police Chief Keith Hutcheson.

Police and medical personnel responded to the apartment at Highway 41 and Jefferson at 11 a.m. after a medical call was made to 911 concerning an elderly woman.

Hutcheson said the senior was fine, but Rice, the granddaughter, was acting suspiciously.

"Something just didn't seem right," Hutcheson said. "She acted like she could be under the influence of something. She was about to leave and we asked her, 'What's going on?'"

During the interview with Rice, it was discovered that she was in possession of marijuana.

Police subsequently searched Rice's purse, with her consent, and found meth inside.

Hutcheson said a toilet at the apartment was overflowing with feces and a maintenance man was called upon to rectify the situation. He said the rest of the apartment was clean.
