Concessioner schedule issued for Glacier Park

The 2014 operating dates for Glacier National Park concessioners have been scheduled. These concessioners work under contract and provide lodging, food service, retail shops, tours, transportation, horseback riding, guided day hikes and backpacking trips, boat tours and small boat rentals.

• Belton Chalets, Inc. at 1-888-345-2649 or www.sperrychalet.com or www.graniteparkchalet.com, backcountry chalets, Granite Park Chalet available for overnight use as a rustic hiker shelter opens June 30 and closes Sept. 8; Sperry Chalet offers traditional overnight accommodations and food service for overnight guests and day hikers with meal reservations opens July 10 and closes Sept. 8.

• Glacier Guides, Inc. (1-800-521-7238 or 406-387-5555 or www.glacierguides.com/) Day hikes and backpacking May through October.

• Glacier National Park Lodges, central reservations 855-733-4522 or www.glaciernationalparklodges.com, front country lodging, food and beverage services, retail, tour and transportation services; Lake McDonald Lodge and Camp Store open May 24 - Sept. 28; Jammer Joe’s Restaurant open June 28 - Sept. 1; Many Glacier Hotel open June 11 - Sept. 21; Rising Sun Motor Inn and Camp Store open June 20 - Sept. 14; Swiftcurrent Motor Inn open June 17 - Sept. 15; Swiftcurrent Campstore open June 7 - Sept. 15; Two Medicine Campstore open May 30 - Sept. 7; Village Inn open May 29 - Sept. 15.

• Glacier National Park Lodges, Red Bus Tours operate the same dates as the hotels. Additionally, west-side tours will be offered on weekends through the third week of October; West-Side Shuttle (transportation between Amtrak in West Glacier and Village Inn/Lake McDonald Lodge open May 24 - Sept. 28; Many Glacier Hiker’s Shuttle, connects to NPS Transit at St. Mary Visitor Center opens July 1 - Sept. 1.

• Glacier Park Boat Company (406-257-2426 or www.glacierparkboats.com/) Boat tours and rentals; Apgar, rentals only open May 31 - Sept. 1; Lake McDonald open May 24 - Sept. 21; Many Glacier open June 14 - Sept. 14; Rising Sun tours only open June 21 - Sept. 1; Two Medicine open June 7 - Sept. 7.

• Sun Tours at 1-800-786-9220 or 406-226-9220 or www.glaciersuntours.com, road-based tours highlighting Blackfeet culture and history, open June 1 - Sept. 30.

There are also several privately-owned facilities in Apgar Village that offer lodging, dining, camping supplies, groceries and gifts from May through much of September, some year-round.

Canyon bike trail meeting May 16

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
