HAYDEN - A pilot and his passenger escaped injury Wednesday evening when a float plane crashed near the Coeur d'Alene Airport.

Terry L. Holman, 73, of Spokane, was banking to land his plane at the Coeur d'Alene Airport when the engine cut out. One of the floats on the plane clipped the exhaust pipe on a road grader in a field at the Warren K Industrial Park before the plane hit the ground, Kootenai County Sheriff's Lt. Stu Miller said.

The pilot and his 28-year-old son, Brian C. Holman, were coming from Spokane's Felts Field to the Coeur d'Alene Airport where they have a hangar.

The crash happened in a field near "Blown Motor," a business at the industrial park.

A crew from W.M. Winkler Concrete was pouring a slab at a nearby business when they heard the crash.

"It hit the grader," Aaron Ingram said. "I looked over and I saw the plane bounce. You could just see the back of it."

Coworker Jeff Fowler said the crash was so loud he thought a building had fallen over.

"It shook the ground," he said.

Miller reported the Holmans suffered only minor cuts and scrapes in the crash. He added that FAA and NTSB officials were headed to the scene to investigate the crash.

Terry Holman told Miller he has been flying since 1960 and this was his first crash.
