HELENA — Tribal law-enforcement officers have arrested a state senator and Blackfeet leader involved in a political dispute that has split the tribe’s governing council.

Members of the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council faction that opposes Sen. Shannon Augare say Augare was arrested Friday for not complying with the terms of a plea agreement for a 2013 drunk-driving conviction.

Tribal attorney Dawn Running Wolf says it’s not clear where Augare will be detained until his arraignment Monday.

She says the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which operates the jail where he would be placed, is disputing the arrest warrant because it includes no bond.

Augare has said he has complied with the plea agreement and the warrant is politically motivated.

His attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
