Retiring teachers

An open house will be held at the Deer Park School for retiring teachers Teri Seward Whited and Suzie Morey Menke on Thursday, May 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. Both have more than 30 years of service at the school.

Phi Theta Kappa

Three Columbia Falls students at Flathead Valley Community College were inducted into the Alpha Iota Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa during the international honor society’s spring induction ceremony — Jacob Burgess, Autumn Fisher, Rebecca Ojennes and Theresa Williamson. Nursing graduates

Twenty students from Flathead Valley Community College’s seventh class of practical nursing graduates were honored during a traditional pinning ceremony on May 16. Three graduates are from Columbia Falls — Laura Hunt, Lexy Magnuson and Tiffany Sterling.

State student

Kaitlyn Presnell, a junior at Columbia Falls High School, was recently appointed by Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau to the statewide Student Advisory Board. The 2014-2015 board consists of 39 high school students from 34 Montana schools. The board’s first meeting will be held Oct. 9 and 10 in Helena. Scholarships

Three of the 37 students in the Flathead Valley to receive Montana University System Honor Scholarships averaging $16,000 each are from Columbia Falls High School — Caleb Baumann, Mason Gedlaman and Brooke Wilson. The scholarship waives undergraduate tuition for up to eight semesters at any campus of the Montana University System or at the Dawson, Flathead Valley, or Miles City community colleges.

Grad party

The Columbia Falls Class of 2014 Parent Committee needs volunteers to help with the annual graduation party to be held at the high school gym on Saturday, June 7, and for donations that can be used for prizes. A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
