Memorial Day ceremonies planned

Several Memorial Day events are planned for the area on Monday, including:

COEUR d'ALENE

* Coeur d'Alene Veterans of Foreign Wars 889 will hold the veterans bell and wreath ceremony at the new McEuen Park at 9 a.m. The VFW will hold a ceremony at St. Thomas Cemetery on east Sherman Avenue in Coeur d'Alene at 10 a.m. The group will also hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Forest Cemetery near the Civil War statue.

* The Marine Corps League's program will be at 2 p.m. at Memorial Gardens on north Government Way.

POST FALLS

* American Legion Post 143 will host a ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery at 10 a.m. Lew Allert, Vietnam veteran and the post's Veteran of the Year, will be the featured speaker.

Frank Henderson and Bob Templin, both World War II veterans, will be honored as the Post Falls Veterans Committee's Veterans of the Year.

Volunteers are invited to assist with placing flags on veterans' gravesites at 6 a.m. Monday. Flags will be taken down at 6 p.m.

HAYDEN

The city and members of the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Farragut Base, will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. at Honeysuckle Beach with the laying of a memorial wreath and tolling the boats, honoring more than 4,000 service men and women lost at sea.

The main ceremony is at 11 a.m. at the PFC Robert J. Gordon Veterans Memorial Plaza at City Hall. Staff Sgt. Ryan Rogers, a member of the Idaho Army National Guard who served in Iraq, will give the keynote address.

Refreshments will be served in the council chambers after the ceremonies.

RATHDRUM

The city will hold a ceremony at 1 p.m. at Pinegrove Cemetery.

SPIRIT LAKE

The VFW will hold a ceremony at noon at Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake.

BLANCHARD

The VFW will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Blanchard Cemetery.
