CHEWELAH, Wash. - James Prockish struck out eight in a seven-hit shutout as the Prairie Cardinals beat the host Northeast 49ers 2-0 in the Dave Franklin Memorial tournament at Chewelah High.
"James threw really well and our kids played really solid defense behind him," said Ron Mackie, who notched his first victory as Prairie coach.
Jacob Koski had an RBI single to score Kris Jackson in the fourth inning and Dustin Ceballos singled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh by Trystan Valente for Prairie against the 49ers.
In the team's second game, the Belgrade (Mont.) Bandits held off Prairie for a 10-9 win in six innings due to a time limit.
Prairie (1-2) scored seven runs in the sixth inning, keyed by a two-run double by Jackson and a three-run double by Ceballos.
"We were over-swinging early on and made some adjustments," Mackie said. "At the end of the sixth, we had things rolling our way. We pitched well early, but gave up too many walks and hit by pitches late."
Prairie wraps up pool play with a game against Gonzaga Prep today at 2:30 p.m. at Chewelah High, with placing games set for Monday.

Coeur d'Alene (0-1-1) opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Devin Kluss and an RBI single by Colton Gray. Kluss finished with five RBIs for Coeur d'Alene, which faces the Southridge Bandits today at noon, then faces the Washington SCA at 2:30 p.m. at Central Valley High to conclude pool play.
"It's another case where when our defense and pitching catches up, we'll be tough to beat," said Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton, whose team finished in a 15-15 tie with the Spokane Dodgers on Friday. "We're staying aggressive with the bats and staying hungry. They're confident they'll win two games tomorrow, and I expect them to do that."
