MOSES LAKE - A 25-year-old man is presumed dead after jumping into Moses Lake while running from police after an attempted DUI arrest early Sunday morning.
About 3 a.m., an officer stopped a blue Toyota pickup truck at a business on North Stratford Road and Knolls Vista Drive. As the officer was taking the driver into custody for DUI, the suspect pulled away and ran from the officer, according to Capt. Dave Sands.
The suspect reportedly ran to the brush along the shore. As other officers arrived and cut off the suspect, he dove into the lake. Officers reportedly urged the suspect to come back to shore but he continued to ignore police. It became obvious to officers the suspect was having difficulty and two officers entered the water to help him, Sands said.
The officers were carried away from the suspect by the current. The strong current and the water temperature made it too dangerous for officers to continue rescue efforts. The suspect was last seen going under the water.
Moses Lake Fire Department search and rescue units were called on scene, but the suspect was not found as of Monday.
The suspect's name was not released and is being withheld until his family is notified.
