Consumption overload

In an age of infinite entertainment options, I probably shouldn't waste time half-watching Kevin Hart's "About Last Night" remake.

It wasn't long ago that a quiet Friday evening at home meant watching a single movie, or, if the workweek wasn't particularly demanding, a double-feature coupled with take-and-bake pizza.

Compare that to my new "quiet Friday evening," where within a span of two hours I did the following:

1. Watched 40 minutes of "About Last Night."

2. Paused "About Last Night" to watch the bloody insane season finale of NBC's "Hannibal."

3. Used my smartphone to read several reviews of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" in between commercials of "Hannibal."

4. Flipped through a few pages of the original "Days of Future Past" comic during the quieter moments of "Hannibal."

5. Checked the baseball score several times. The Minnesota Twins had a miserable series in San Francisco last weekend, in case you were wondering.

6. "Liked" a photo on Facebook. Probably a photo with kittens or babies or both.

7. Tried out the "Spider Guy" app on my phone, where a not-at-all Spider-man web slings from building to building. It's a free app!

8. Pretended to understand Snapchat while snapchatting a photo of my 10-month-old son's foot, who was sleeping on me during "Hannibal." And no, concerned parents, my 10-month-old is not allowed to see a single image from "Hannibal," just on the off-chance it will turn him into a cannibal.

9. Resumed "About Last Night," though I had lost so much interest in it, I decided to read a couple chapters from the book, "The Disaster Artist" while Kevin Hart rattled on about his private parts.

For the record, "About Last Night" seems like a fine movie, and judging by some of its reviews, it might actually be worth watching without a million distractions. That will never happen though, because I'm too busy barely paying attention to Jack Bauer chasing a terrorist on "24," or being chased by a volcano in "Pompeii," or WHATEVER Kiefer Sutherland was doing on my television screen.

I should probably ruminate on how technology has numbed the world around us. Or I should just be ashamed of myself or try harder to live in the moment... or something.

Ooh, look! A new update for "The Simpsons Tapped Out!" Time to send Homer on another 24-hour Monkey Trauma Center marathon!

Having small children in the house forces entertainment sacrifices. Sure, I can choose not to watch "MasterChef" this summer, or not re-watch the six previous "X-Men" movies before I see "Days of Future Past." I could even spread the new season of "Orange is the New Black" on Netflix (June 6!) across several weeks.

Or I can multi-task, get less sleep and knock out all 13 episodes in the span of a couple evenings. The baby wakes up at 2 a.m. anyway, so what's the point of trying to sleep before then?

Remember the reason why the humans created smartphones - to keep us awake when we should be sleeping (and to avoid actual work).

Every so often, I can still focus on one thing at a time, even when I probably shouldn't. There are segments on "Sesame Street" I can recite with my daughter, and nothing keeps my attention more than a movie I aggressively hate (that means you, "X-Men: The Last Stand").

And, if you will allow one last philosophical aside, let me say smartphone culture has ushered in a new era of cultural enlightenment that...

Oooh, there's a new level available in the "Spider-Guy" app!

'Dory' an entertaining remix of its predecessor

“Finding Nemo,” Pixar’s 2003 masterpiece about a clownfish searching the ocean for his son, probably didn’t need a sequel. While the promise of numerous money bags no doubt played a role in Disney/Pixar’s decision to make “Finding Dory,” returning director Andrew Stanton and his team have made a film that stands on its own, even when it’s retreading the things you liked about the original.

Sixteen years ago, director Ang Lee led a martial arts epic to Oscar glory. The original “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was a massive critical and box office success, combining dazzling visuals, innovative fight choreography and impassioned storytelling.
