• Summer reading programs to start
COEUR d'ALENE - It's that time of year again: Teen Summer Reading and the "Fizz, Boom, Read" children's summer reading programs begin June 16 at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library.
This year, the library has extended its Teen Summer Reading Program to 11 weeks, through Aug. 31. To participate, pick up a Teen Reading Log from the library fill it out, and turn it in at any library desk. Teens can also log their minutes online, on the library's website.
Weekly prize drawings will include gift cards, books, and other goodies, and if you are able to meet the challenge of reading 25 hours during the program, your name will be entered in the grand prize drawing for a Kindle Fire HDX.
Along with reading logs, the library will host a slew of programs specifically for teens, including physics olympics, crafts, video game freeplay, creative writing club and more.
For details, contact Young Adult Coordinator Laura Jenkins at ljenkins@cdalibrary.org or at (208)769-2315 ext. 469.
• Magic show helps to kick off reading programs
COEUR d'ALENE - Summer Reading 2014 at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library will use science to examine the world around us as well as share stories, music, books and experiments.
Summer Reading, "Fizz, Boom, Read," begins in the Seagraves Children's Library on the lower level on June 16 and continues through July 30, when the library will host a Science Fair and Extreme Science with Radical Rick.
On June 17, from 2 to 3 p.m., the library will also host a free Magic Show with Dick Frost in the Community Room to kick off Summer Reading.
All programs for all ages are free and most do not require registration. Even if children do not attend programs, families are invited to visit the library for a reading log to keep track of the time children spend reading or having someone read to them. For every three hours of reading time, bring the log to the library to collect a prize.
Reading Logs are also available for download at the library website: www.cdalibrary.org. Click on the "services" link and then on "children."
Local schools are also participating in the library's Summer Reading Traveling Trophy Contest. Each time a student visits the library they can vote for their school to receive the honor of having the trophy at their school library for the next school year.
