Safety is bike rider's goal

COEUR d'ALENE - Roy Wargi is a stickler for safety. Maybe that's why he has lived as long as he has.
The 93-year-old retiree and avid cyclist has tricked out his tricycle with working turn signals and a brake light. He is well-versed in the rules of the road.
When he sees a cyclist breaking the law or cycling unsafely, Wargi has been known to set them straight.
Often, cyclists pass by so quickly he can't catch up.
"It's terrible," he said. "They go through stop signs and speed down the street."
A Coeur d'Alene resident of 70 years, Wargi is advocating for bicycle licensing. That way, he said, he can take down a license and the police can track down bad bikers.
"If you see a bicycle going the wrong way, how would you know how to identify them," he said. "If they're licensed, then you know who they are."
Wargi said he asked the city about licensing cyclists and was referred to the state. He said he wasn't sure how to reach his state representatives.
When the weather is warm, Wargi hangs up his car keys and rides his tricycle on city streets. The three wheels give him better balance.
He knows his hand signals, but Wargi said he installed the turn signals to make his ride even safer.
"At the top of my list is safety," he said.
