NIC ROUNDUP: Nguyen, Wilson win at Northwest Open

POWELL, Wyo. - Michael Nguyen (125 pounds) and Deondre Wilson (133) claimed championship for the Cardinals in the season-opening Northwest Open on the campus of Northwest College.

"For it being the first tournament of the year, I was impressed with our guys," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "We had some guys that competed well and got after things."

NIC travels to face Labette on Friday in Parsons, Kan.

Former Coeur d'Alene standout Garrett DeMers, now at Montana State-Northern, beat Tristian Baus of Great Falls by technical fall 17-2, finishing third at 197.

COEUR d'ALENE - Thanks to a miscommunication between the opposing keeper and one of his defenders, Matt Howard's corner kick in the third minute somehow found its way into the net, helping the Cardinals defeat the Sasquatch at Eisenwinter Field in the regular-season and Northwest Athletic Conference finale for both teams.

"Sometimes the right stuff happens to you," NIC coach Ken Thompson explained.

NIC (15-1-2, 13-1-1 NWAC), which won the East Division, receives a first-round bye in the NWAC playoffs, and will host a quarterfinal game next Saturday. The Cardinals' opponent will be the winner of a Wednesday game pitting Pierce at either Highline or Peninsula. Saturday's winner advances to the tourney's final four the following weekend in Tukwila, Wash.

CC Spokane (10-9-1, 8-6-1), which finished fourth in the East and did not qualify for the playoffs, hit the post or the crossbar four times in the first half. One of them came on a shot from the left, toward the upper right corner, that NIC keeper Mitch Markovetz dove backwards, reached and deflected the ball off the crossbar, and the Cardinals cleared it out.

"It was one of his best saves of the year. He was very light on his feet," Thompson said. "We had a great regular season, we have a hard-working group of guys, and we hope the postseason is as fun as the regular season."

COEUR d'ALENE - Jaimee Hulst scored in the 60th minute on a free kick for the host Cardinals, but the Sasquatch answered six minutes later in the Northwest Athletic Conference game at Eisenwinter Field, as NIC tied for the ninth time in 20 matches.

The Cardinals were fouled about 10 yards off the right corner of the penalty area. The left-footed Hulst took the free kick and bent the ball into the top left corner of the goal over the Sasquatch keeper's hands.

"It was a great goal," NIC coach Dan Hogan said.

Sarah Melvin of CCS took a long pass about 15 yards outside the penalty area. When an NIC defender overcommitted, Melvin cut the ball back inside, dribbled into the penalty area and drilled a shot past NIC keeper Madi Williams. Hogan said Williams made two "spectacular" saves before Melvin tied it.

NIC (9-2-9, 8-2-8), which finished third in the East Division, travels to Shoreline (Wash.) Community College on Wednesday in the first round of the NWAC playoffs. The winner travels to Eugene, Ore., to play Lane CC on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

CCS (19-2-2, 15-1-2), which won the East, receives a first-round bye, and will host a quarterfinal game Saturday.

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Braian Angloa-Rodas scored 22 points on 8 of 14 shooting for the 21st ranked Cardinals in a loss to the Generals in the Sheridan tournament at the Golden Dome.

"We had a lot of chances down the stretch," NIC coach Corey Symons said. "Tonight really felt like an NIC-CSI matchup. We got down 16 with six minutes to go, cut it to six and had a couple lay-ins that rimmed out. We had a million chances and fought through some adversity. I was happy with the kids and we really fought until the end."

Angola-Rodas also had eight assists for NIC.

"He played really well for us," said Symons of Angola-Rodas. "He's going to be great for us and plays both ends of the floor really well.

Kyi Thomas scored a game-high 27 points for Sheridan, which led 49-39 at halftime.

Former Lake City High standout Kyle Guice had 14 points and 10 rebounds for NIC, which outrebounded Sheridan 34-28.

NIC (1-1) hosts the Gonzaga club team on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Rolly Williams Court.

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Caitlyn Behymer scored 14 points off the bench for the 18th ranked Cardinals in a loss to the Generals in the Sheridan tournament at the Golden Dome.

"We just had a slow start," NIC coach Chris Carlson said. "I just didn't see the energy tonight. I don't know what it was, but we were fouling and giving up 3-pointers. Our energy in the first half was the difference, because in the second half, we got after it defensively. It was just a bad start that beat us tonight."

Sheridan College shot 16 of 31 in the first half from the field and 14 of 20 from the free throw line to build a 52-27 halftime lead.

Samara Hill scored 13 points for NIC (1-1), which hosts a group of North Idaho All-Stars next Saturday at 5:30 at Rolly Williams Court.

TWIN FALLS - Brittany Aldridge had 14 kills and Maddi Seidl had 11 digs and 32 assists for the Cardinals in a 25-17, 22-25, 25-7, 25-17 loss against the Golden Eagles in the Scenic West Athletic Conference finale for both schools.

CSI (30-2, 9-1 SWAC)) clinched the league championship with the win, and will host this week's Region 18 tournament beginning Friday in Twin Falls.

Salt Lake (20-8, 8-2) receives the other opening round bye at regionals.

Brenna Meehan had seven kills and 12 digs and Kennedy Chadwick 16 digs for NIC (10-10, 4-6), which will be the fourth-seed and face Utah State-Eastern (9-15, 3-7) to open the tournament on Friday at noon.

Snow (19-6, 6-4) faces Colorado Northwestern (5-21, 0-10) in the other opening round match.

Natasa Savovic had 16 kills for CSI.
