School records, and last chances for state

COEUR d'ALENE - The last time a 200-yard individual medley record was set by a Coeur d'Alene swimmer, Viking senior Kyle Jones was a mere toddler.
Highlighted by the fact Jones broke a 15-year-old school record in the 200 individual medley event in the North Idaho district swim meet, the Vikings dominated in winning with 201 points to Moscow's 111 points.
Sandpoint won a close girls meet, edging Cd'A 116-110, while Lake City was third with 95 points and Post Falls came in fourth with 79.
In the sixth event on Saturday at the Kroc Center, Jones beat Coeur d'Alene teammate Kade Hern and finished with a winning time of 1 minute, 57.36 seconds. Hern finished second (2:03.89). Jones' time beat Tom Allen's time of 1:59.5 in 1999.
"I had my whole team cheering for me and all my friends were there," Jones said. "It was really fun. Kade pushed me really hard."
Jones was also part of a 200 medley relay team that won (1:41.68), along with Gabe Markowski, Ethan Cordes and Hern, plus he helped tack on another victory in the 400 freestyle relay with Beau Urbaniak, Matt Chastain and Cole Curtis (3:32.78). Jones won the 100 backstroke (54.59).
Some coaches were resting members of their team for next Saturday's state swimming meet at the West Boise Family YMCA in Boise.
"Kyle, Beau and Ethan each had standout meets," Coeur d'Alene coach Rich Swoboda said. "I have a lot of work to do, figuring out who to put where (before the state meet)."
Also setting a Vikings school record was junior Nicole Rozier in winning the 100 breaststroke (1:07.41).
Post Falls junior Maggie deTar set a meet record in winning the 200 freestyle (1:56.07), beating the old record of 1:56.08. deTar will swim in the 100 free and 500 free events in the state meet next Saturday.
deTar also won the 100 butterfly (1:01.89) and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Suzanne deTar, Melody Kempton and Morgan Davis (1:48.47).
"I didn't know I broke it until I got out of the pool," Maggie deTar said. "It was shocking, but yeah, it was great. I beat my best times."
Neither Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls nor Lake City had swimmers who qualified for the state meet on Saturday, but all have several who qualified earlier this season.
That left Sandpoint as the team that got its money's worth, as freshman Miles Luce and junior Ben Reich, plus freshmen girls Emily Deitz and Payton Bokowy, made their last chances count.
"I was nervous that the other two swimmers (in each event) were going to beat me," said Deitz, who qualified for state in winning the 200 IM (2:20.58) and the 100 back (1:00.41). "I knew that once I was in the pool, I was fine. It's a great accomplishment."
Reich was more relieved than anything, in qualifying in the 100 breast (1:17.91) and the 100 back (1:08.51).
"It is the most god-awful experience I've had," Reich said of the stress associated with qualifying for state the week before the meet in Boise. "I wish I'd had done it earlier. I did it in back-to-back events, which was not fun."
Bokowy qualified in winning both the 50 free (25.14) and 100 free (53.37), while Luce qualified in the 200 free (2:06.63).
"Now they have a full list of events to swim at state," Sandpoint coach Mike Brosnahan said. "This is a good pool, it's still pretty close to home. The kids are tired (from a long season). I rested some of them, we're gunning for state. I probably rested half of them (from the boys and girls teams). It's been a long season and I really haven't let up on them until this week. It's a young team; I only have two seniors."
The Timberwolves' day was highlighted by a runner-up finish in the 200 IM (2:24.49) and a third-place finish in the 50 free (26.14) by Hannah Gonzalez.
The 200 free relay team of Tiffany Portue, Ashlee Gonzalez, Brianne Gundlach and Hannah Gonzalez also came in second (1:48.86).
