Information for voters about Election Day

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Tuesday for the general election.

Choices for U.S. senator and representative, a host of legislative races and an open county commissioner seat headline Tuesday's ballot.

Redistricting may have changed precincts and legislative districts for some voters.

To find out where to vote, as well as precinct numbers and legislative districts, voters can click on the “My Voter page” app on the Flathead County Election Department website, http://flathead.mt.gov/election, or call the Election Department at 758-5535.

Those who have not registered to vote can do so from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the election office, located during election season at the Country Fair Kitchen at the Flathead County Fairgrounds in Kalispell.

If late voters have moved within the county or have moved here from another Montana county, they will fill out provisional ballots that won’t be counted until a week after the election.

All voters are required to show identification at the polls before they can vote.

There’s only one contested Flathead County government race. Republican Phil Mitchell is running against Democrat Stacey Schnebel for the open District 1 county commissioner seat.

In other county races, candidates are unopposed.

An unusual contested race is on for nonpartisan county Soil Conservation District supervisor positions. Four candidates — Ron Buentemeier, Verdell Jackson, Mark Siderius and Bob Storer — are seeking three available positions.

Voters will decide a Flathead County referendum that would organize a special district to provide funding for emergency dispatch and supporting communication services, equipment and infrastructure. The assessment would cost residential homeowners $25 a year while businesses would pay $50 per commercial unit.

Kalispell voters will weigh in on a couple of ballot measures.

They will be asked whether they support a Kalispell city levy to generate $736,000 annually for emergency medical services.

Voters within Kalispell Elementary School District 5 will decide whether the district should buy 25.4 acres on Airport Road for $420,000. The land would be for future school expansion.

There’s a full slate of state legislative contests, two races for Montana Supreme Court justices, one for Public Service Commission and the high-profile U.S. races for Montana senator and representative.

There’s one Montana legislative referendum on whether to continue late voter registration and a constitutional amendment to change the title of the state auditor.

Local government study commissions are on the ballot for Whitefish and Columbia Falls voters.

However, with only two candidates vying for three positions in Whitefish and no candidates in Columbia Falls, write-in candidates likely will determine who serves on the study commissions in the two North Valley cities.

In Whitefish, Turner Askew and Rebecca Norton are running for nonpartisan commissioner seats. The third member of the commission will be the person with the most write-in votes.

If there are no write-in votes in Whitefish, the City Council will appoint a third member.

The city of Columbia Falls has no one on the ballot for its local government study commission, so write-in candidates more than likely will determine who serves on that commission.

Columbia Falls City Manager Susan Nicosia advised the City Council recently that if the commission seats are still empty after today’s election, the city may advertise for volunteers to be appointed by the council.

Kalispell and Flathead County voters opted not to conduct the local government review.
