COEUR d'ALENE - Organizers are readying for the 17th annual free Community Thanksgiving Day Meal at the Lake City Center in Coeur d'Alene.

"It's put on by the community for the community," said Mike Hillicoss, event coordinator. "We want it to be as close to being at grandma's house as possible."

The meal will be served from noon to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, at the center at 1916 Lakewood Drive. Everyone is welcome.

There will be live music, a kids activity corner and an appearance by Santa Claus. Attendees will also be given food to take home.

Last year 1,000 meals were served.

Tax-deductible monetary donations should be made out to "LCC Thanksgiving" and donated at the center or mailed to: Lake City Center, 1916 Lakewood Drive, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814.

Turkey and pie donations are also needed. Those wanting to make such a donation or volunteer at the event should call Hillicoss at (509) 226-3208 or email freethanksgivingmeal@aol.com. Call if you need a ride or need a meal delivered.

Hillicoss said it takes 125 volunteers, 50 turkeys, 80 pies and $4,000 to make the event happen. So far, $300 has been raised.

"Without the donations of private individuals, this couldn't take place," he said.

If any food is left over, Hillicoss said, it is donated to area charities.

"Nothing goes to waste," he said.

Hillicoss and his wife, Vickie, and friends started the event in the 1990s. It was held at St. Pius X Catholic Church the first year and has been held at the Lake City Center ever since.

"It has been a partnership made in heaven," said Rick Currie, the center's executive director. "It's a tradition for many families to be a part of this."
