COEUR d'ALENE - Northwest Sacred Music Chorale (NWSMC)'s fall concert, the monumental and timeless "Ein Deutsches Requiem" - more commonly referred to as "The Brahms Requiem" - will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 and 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Kroc Center in Coeur d'Alene.
A pre-concert lecture will begin 45 minutes before both concerts and will provide insight into the composer, the music itself and historical context.
"Requiem," Brahms' largest-scale choral work, is a perfect representation of his views on life, death and joy overcoming sorrow. It was considered triumphant, uplifting and revolutionary in its day and remains one of the great choral works of all time.
It will be sung in English with chamber orchestra and feature soloists Jeanne McPherson, soprano and Charles Ethridge, baritone.
The program will be conducted by NWSMC's conductor, Kent Kimball. Kimball graduated from the University of Southern California and studied with three of the greatest choral conductors in America: Charles Hirt, Roger Wagner and Robert Shaw. He has conducted the Century Singers, Hamblen Baroque Chorus, Spokane String Quartet, The Westminster Chamber Orchestra and the Good News Singers (founder and director) in concerts throughout the United States.
NWSMC rounds out its season with two holiday performances at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Kroc Center. The main anchor piece will be J. S. Bach's "Cantata No. 78 - Jesus, by Thy Cross and Passion." It includes one of the most joyous and glorious duets ever written by Bach. There will also be many choral numbers performed including four select holiday pieces sung by the Ensemble of the Chorale conducted by Gaynell Coppess. The spring concerts will feature Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah" with Metropolitan Opera star Aaron St. Clair Nicholson as Elijah and other featured soloists at 7 p.m. April 18 and 3 p.m. April 19 at the Kroc Center and at 3 p.m. April 26 at Central Lutheran Church, 512 South Bernard St. in Spokane.
