COEUR d'ALENE - The North Idaho CASA Program raised $59,000 at its second "CASA Uncorked" fundraiser, Oct. 30.
North Idaho CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) works to recruit, train and support citizen volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in courtrooms and communities.
At the fundraiser, about 170 CASA supporters gathered to socialize over wine and hors d'oeuvres and to partake in a live and silent auction of more than 50 items donated by generous individuals and local businesses.
In her opening remarks, Sandy Patano, a longtime CASA supporter, outlined the importance of the 97 CASA volunteers in our community. The volunteers serve abused and neglected children in child protection court cases in Kootenai, Bonner, Boundary, Benewah and Shoshone counties.
Dan English, executive director of North Idaho CASA, said the amount raised at the fundraiser will help the program a lot.
"The generosity of our community is amazing and this will help bridge the gap of funds needed to operate our CASA program," English said. "We receive a third of our funding from the state of Idaho and must raise the remaining two-thirds through grants and fundraising events such as CASA Uncorked."
CASA extended its appreciation to The Coeur d'Alene Resort, which donated the use of the Hagadone Event Center for CASA Uncorked.
"Because of The Resort's generous donation, 50 percent of the cost of each ticket went directly to North Idaho CASA to help fund the training, recruiting and operational support for our CASA volunteers," said Hilary Hoffman, CASA development director.
CASA also recognized sponsor Kootenai Health.
CASA volunteers serve nearly 500 children annually through more than 4,500 volunteer hours this year in Idaho's five northern counties.
