POST FALLS - A fire destroyed a shop in Post Falls on Sunday night and temporarily displaced a family because of loss of electricity to the adjacent home.
Kootenai County Fire and Rescue responded to a call of smoke at 1322 S. Greensferry Road near West Riverview Drive at 6:45 p.m.
Firefighters located a shop on fire within 6 feet of the home. The shop was about 1,000 square feet and made of wood.
"Once the structure fire was located, additional resources were called to the scene to assist in confining the fire to the shop," said KCFR Chief Warren Merritt.
The shop was a total loss. Neither a damage estimate nor a cost estimate had been determined as of Monday. The building was used as a shop and for storage.
"The residence had some heat and fire damage to the exterior of the structure," Merritt said.
The family of seven was temporarily displaced and stayed at a hotel overnight. The services of the American Red Cross and other housing needs were not necessary, Merritt said.
"Once power is restored to the residence, it can be occupied by the family," he said. "The fire from the shop was significant as firefighters carefully and strategically placed hose lines to protect the home. This was outstanding work from our firefighters."
There were no hydrants in the area to help battle the blaze. The water supply was established using tenders. Tenders carry between 1,500 and 2,000 gallons of water.
No one was home at the time of the fire. A neighbor who noticed the smoke called 911.
Crews from Northern Lakes, Hauser Lake, Mica-Kidd Island and Coeur d'Alene also responded.
