Why do chiropractors take X-rays? For the same reason dentists and orthopedists take X-rays, to get more information. X-rays are very helpful diagnostic tools.

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation used to create images of bones, joints and soft tissue structures inside the body. X-rays mostly pass through softer tissues while hard tissues like bones do not allow the beam to pass, leaving a white image on the film. More dense soft tissues, like muscles and organs, will appear as various shades of gray while less dense areas will appear black.

The primary reason to x-ray the spine is to rule out something potentially dangerous like fractures, infections, dislocations, tumors, cancer, and other serious spinal conditions that need to be referred to other medical specialists. Chiropractors also take X-rays of the spine to determine a diagnosis as to the cause of the patient's particular problem. The images show things like bone spurs (osteoarthritis), disc height, joint spaces, bone density, and alignment. That information is then used to develop the most effective treatment plan for the patient.

Chiropractors take spinal X-rays in a weight-bearing position. Standing X-rays allow the measurement of things like scoliosis, leg length deficiency (short leg), and joint space narrowing. Most medical facilities take their X-rays with the patient lying down. These pictures have the advantage of being clearer, but they are less accurate for evaluating things like leg length and spinal alignment.

As with other medical procedures, X-rays are safe when used with care. Your doctor has been trained to use the minimum amount of radiation necessary to obtain the needed results. The amount of radiation used is very small, especially with the use of digital devices, and the benefits greatly outweigh the risk of harm.

X-rays are valuable learning tools for the patient. Most people are amazed once they see their X-rays up close. In many cases, they can even identify their misalignments and degeneration themselves.

Cunningham Chiropractic offers on-site digital X-rays. For more information, contact Dr. Wendy at haydenhealth@gmail.com.

Studies have shown that pain medication can cause adverse effects and kidney or liver. Worse yet, they don't even correct the underlying cause of the headache.
