Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 years, 5 months AGO
John "Jack" F. Ober, Jr., 82, of Hauser, Idaho, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, Thursday evening, Oct. 30, 2014, at Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene. He was a beloved father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and companion.
Jack was born Sept. 1, 1932, in Los Angeles, Calif., an only son to John and Dorothy Ober, Sr. Jack grew up and went to school in the Los Angeles area, and at the age of 17 chose to leave high school and serve his country. (He later earned his GED.)
He joined the Army and proudly fought and served in the Korean war from 1949-1952, receiving an Honorable Discharge with medals including the Combat Inf Badge, Korean Service Medal w/5 Bronze Camp Stars, and a Dist. Unit Embellishment Medal. His service in the Korean War meant a lot to him.
Jack was married twice. His first marriage was to Donna Statler on June 14, 1953. They had two children - daughter Jacqueline "Jackie" and son Larry. After his divorce, Jack married Mary Raylene B. on June 28, 1959, and had three more children - daughters Lynn and Monica, and son John.
Jack served as a police officer for the San Gabriel Police Department, and then joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department where he was a Deputy Sheriff until his retirement in 1978. He then moved the family from San Bernadino, Calif. to the Coeur d'Alene area and was hired on at Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane, Wash., where he worked until his full retirement in the early 1990s.
Jack lived in Post Falls for 15 years and then moved to Hauser Lake in 1994, where he resided until his death.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Monica Yurick, mother Dorothy French and father John Ober, Sr.
Jack is survived by his wife, Mary, of 55 years; daughter Jackie (Eldon) Grant of Bothell Wash., son Larry (Kim) Brown of Hayden, Idaho, daughter Lynn (Tony, Jr.) LaPan of Coeur d'Alene, son John (Sheena) Ober, III of Coeur d'Alene, and Vita Fuller of Hauser, Idaho, his companion of 20 years. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren: Richard and Dallas Grant, Haley Ardnt and Alec Brown, Justin and Jonna Hart, Jamie and Jeri Yurick and Johnny Ober, IV; one great-grandchild, Skyler Grant; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack loved keeping busy. If he wasn't working on a home improvement or construction project (either his or someone else's), he would be riding his motorcycle or taking a road trip down to California to visit his old friends. He loved riding his tractor, woodworking, taking road trips and enjoying the beauty of nature. He loved spending time with his family, and one of his greatest joys was helping others. He will be greatly and forever missed.
We love you Dad.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Bell Tower Funeral Home, 3398 E Jenalan Ave., Post Falls, Idaho.
Memorial donations may be made in Jack's name to Woundedwarriorproject.org or to the Kootenai Humane Society.
