POST FALLS - North Idaho College has branched out and is now providing adult basic education and GED opportunities.
NIC recently opened its new adult basic education (ABE) and GED center in Post Falls at the college's Workforce Training Center in Riverbend Commerce Park.
"This has been a reoccurring request from students," Laura Umthun, an ABE instructor, said of the new center. "With the cost of gas and many students without transportation, this will give us a central location to better serve students."
NIC's ABE/GED center on its Coeur d'Alene campus remains open. NIC formerly had such a center several years ago in Post Falls at the Workforce Training Center before it closed due to funding issues.
The new center is designed for students 16 and older who have withdrawn from public school and want assistance to prepare for the GED test. Adults who have graduated but still have a desire to upgrade their basic skills are also served.
Tuition is free and most learning materials are provided. The ABE program allows students to progress at their own pace and offers small group instruction to achieve goals set for each student.
There are 22 students already attending classes at the new center, which opened three weeks ago and had an open house on Thursday.
"We expect that number to increase," Umthun said.
The new center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Workforce Training Center is among the stops for the Citylink public bus transportation service.
Programs at the center typically last eight weeks. To arrange for a free orientation at either ABE/GED center, call 665-5099.
