COEUR d'ALENE - Kootenai County has the highest rate of domestic violence in Idaho, and victims of these crimes are often in need of services such as a safe shelter and advocacy in court.

In 1977, the North Idaho Violence Prevention Center was founded to address that need and assist families in crisis. The nonprofit provides emergency shelters, counseling, court advocacy and other various resources to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as any children in their care, free of charge.

Katie Coker, executive director of the center, told The Press that the two fundraisers the organization holds each year are critical to its ability to provide services.

"All of our services tend to run at a little bit of a shortfall," Coker said. "The fundraisers just help us to manage our finances each year and pay for the services we provide."

From 5 to 7 p.m., Nov. 19, the center will host "A Martini Affair" at Seasons of Coeur d'Alene, 209 E. Lakeside Ave.

For $50, attendees will receive a complimentary beverage, partake in a buffet-style meal and have the opportunity to participate in several auctions.

"It's just a great way to come out and support a really important cause in the community in an easy way," Coker said.

Coker added that all proceeds from the event will go directly toward funding the services the center provides. Tickets can be purchased at www.nivpc.org or by calling (208) 664-9303.

The North Idaho Violence Prevention Center is located at 850 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d'Alene. Coker encouraged those in need of services to call the center at (208) 664-9303.
