PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lake City opens season with victory

RATHDRUM - Whitney Meier scored 21 points to lead the Lake City Timberwolves to a 69-31 season-opening victory over the Lakeland Hawks on Tuesday at Hawk Court.

Clarissa Smith scored 11 points for Lake City, which travels to Sandpoint on Friday.

Italian exchange student Costanza Piermattei scored eight points and Kaidan Kelsey had four points and seven rebounds for Lakeland (0-2), which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

SANDPOINT - Freshman Melody Kempton scored 17 points, leading the Trojans past the Bulldogs in the nonleague opener for both at Les Rogers Court.

Shayna Allert scored 16 points for Post Falls, which hosts Lewiston to open 5A Inland Empire League play on Dec. 2 at The Arena.

Madi Schoening scored 30 points for Sandpoint, which hosts Lake City on Friday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Keelie Lawler scored nine of her 14 points in the second half as the 3A Tigers rallied past the 4A Bears in a nonleague game.

Timberlake, which trailed 16-15 at halftime, outscored Moscow 17-4 in the third quarter to pull away.

"It was just a real grinder," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "We just finally started to hit some shots and got to the line a little bit in the third. Moscow's a good, big, physical team, but it was good to gut one out."

Allison Kirby scored nine points for Timberlake (3-0), which travels to St. Maries on Thursday.

Gracie Meyer scored nine points for Moscow.

KELLOGG - The 3A Wildcats leapt to a 22-7 halftime lead on their way to a nonleague win over the 2A Panthers at Andrews Gymnasium.

"I thought our defense played well," Kellogg coach Eli Bourgard said. We got points off of our press and we made a good run in the second quarter. I thought our defense fueled our offense. To hold them to 16 points is because of pretty good defense by us."

Kellogg (3-0) plays Thursday at Post Falls JV.

Charter, who lost its season opener, next plays Dec. 2 at Bonners Ferry.
