Bernard "Bernie" Bergal passed away peacefully on Nov. 19, 2014, surrounded by his family at Rose Terrace Cottages.
Bernie was born at home Jan. 16, 1918, during a winter storm in Duluth, Minn. to Bessie and Harry Bergal. Bernie grew up in Duluth and became a watchmaker. He met Rhoda Friedman and they married on Sept. 2, 1939.
Bernie proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1950 Bernie moved his family to California for a better life. He retired in 1977 from Lockheed Martin Missiles Division where he was an engineer. Bernie and Rhoda moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1978 to be near their family.
Bernie was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Rhoda; his mother Bessie, father Harry, stepfather Joe Bongart; sisters Sue and Edyth, brother Bennie; and great-granddaughter Amanda.
Bernie is survived by his three daughters: Lorrie Hultz (Bob), Carol Southern (Dick), and Bobbie Nelmar (Art); grandchildren: Laurie Gayle, Pennie Ann, Earl, John, Tanya and Lisa; 13 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Forest Cemetery on Government Way in Coeur d'Alene.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of North Idaho or the Kootenai Humane Society.
