Local jobless rate at 5.2 percent

Flathead County’s unemployment rate increased slightly in October, reflecting the transition from summer to the quieter shoulder season in terms of job growth.
The October jobless rate posted at 5.2 percent, up from 4.8 percent in September, which was the lowest level in more than six years.
In October, Flathead County had a total labor force of 44,055 people, with 2,278 unemployed workers.
Lake County’s jobless rate improved slightly from 5.3 percent in September to 5.2 percent in October.
Lincoln and Sanders counties saw their unemployment rates inch upward. Lincoln County went from 8.7 percent in September to 9.4 percent in October. Sanders County posted 8.2 percent in September and 8.3 percent in October.
Montana’s unemployment rate dropped slightly in October, down 0.1 percentage points to 4.5 percent, according to the Montana Department of Labor. The unemployment rate has decreased by 0.8 percentage points since January.
Total state employment estimates suggested job growth of 580 jobs over the last month, with 12,145 jobs added over the past year. Total employment estimates include payroll employment plus agricultural and self-employed workers.
The U.S. unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 5.8 percent.
“As we head into the holiday season, Montana’s unemployment rate continues to decline and our economy continues to grow,” Gov. Steve Bullock said in a prepared statement.
“The historic job growth we’ve seen since January should give Montana businesses and retailers confidence as we head to the end of the year.”
