SANDPOINT - Madi Schoening scored 24 points and freshman Grace Kirscher added 15, leading Sandpoint to a 51-49 overtime win over Lake City in nonleague girls basketball Friday night at Les Rogers Court.

It was Sandpoint's first win over Lake City since the 2005-06 season. Lake City had won the last 13 matchups with the Bulldogs.

Schoening, a junior, hit 7 of 15 from the field and 10 of 13 from the foul line, to go with 12 rebounds, five steals and three blocks for the Bulldogs (1-1), who built a 27-15 halftime lead.

"It means everything. It's the culmination of their hard work," said first-year Sandpoint coach Duane Ward. "They're starting to believe. They realized against Post Falls that they could compete with 5As. We knew they (Lake City) would make a run, but the kids hung in there when the pressure was on."

Whitney Meier made 6 of 11 3-point attempts en route to a team-high 23 points, keying a second half comeback for the Timberwolves (1-1). Lauren Rewers added 11 points, Natalie Wheelock six assists, and Olivia Maryon and Clarissa Smith each posted six points and five rebounds.

"Sandpoint outworked us in the first half. I'm proud of the girls for battling back in overtime," said Lake City coach Bryan Kelly. "We had 24 turnovers. You can't win any games when you do that."

Lake City travels to Wenatchee (Wash.) next Saturday.
