SANDPOINT - It's late November, and that can only mean one thing: The mustaches are back in full force.

For the third year in a row, Sandpoint firefighters are risking alienation from their loved ones by growing mustaches - the more outrageous, the better - for a good cause. The month of the mustache culminates with the now-traditional Movember party this Saturday starting 6:30 p.m. at MickDuff's Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St.

Started about 15 years ago in Australia, Movember takes the popular college idea of No-Shave November and adds the mustachioed twist of charitable fundraising into the mix. All around the world this month, men have been growing their facial hair to raise money and awareness for men's health issues, particularly the dangers of prostate cancer.

Three years ago, the Sandpoint Fire Department took up the cause with Sandpoint Movember activities, and the project has only gotten bigger from year to year. The firefighters themselves lead the charge with their own elaborate facial hair, much to the consternation of some wives and girlfriends.

"There are some spouses out there that call it No-Kiss November," said firefighter Britain Whitley.

Even Fire Chief Ron Stocking got in on the action with a very respectable handlebar mustache. As his first Movember participation since taking the job as fire chief earlier this year, he can no doubt expect several more November mustaches in the years to come.

Of course, even among the firefighters, there are a few who couldn't be persuaded to the cause. According to Cpt. Michael Gow, firefighters like Clint Frank and Allo Pucci couldn't quite swing the 'stache this year, leading to a fair share of ribbing throughout the month.

"I'd say they take more grief for not growing a mustache than they would if they did," he said.

The Movember party at MickDuff's serves as the primary fundraiser for the event. Entry costs $10 and gets you a specialized mug, unlimited beer from two kegs purchased by firefighters until they run dry. From there, any additional beer from MickDuff's comes at regular prices.

Those who come bearing mustaches - whether they be real or fake - will find themselves with a few bonuses, including eligibility for prizes. More than that, though, the mustache is a sign of Movember solidarity as participant heed the call to rock the 'stache.
