MINERAL COUNTY – As the centennial year for Mineral County winds down, local historians are conducting one last effort to recognize the milestone by reaching out to the community.

After a celebration earlier in the year that saw hundreds of people gather on the Mineral County courthouse, volunteers with the Mineral County Historical Society are making one last push to make sure the people of Mineral County with ties to the area dating back a hundred years get recognized.

Kay Strombo with the MCHS said the project is an effort to celebrate the heritage of Mineral County and its citizens. She said those that contact her or her associates with the MCHS and Mineral County Museum in Superior will receive a certificate recognizing their longtime connection to the area.

“We want to contact people who had family here in 1910 and who are themselves still living here,” Strombo said. “We would like to present them with a certificate identifying them as a centennial family. So far we have about 15 families that had family members here in 1910. People who are living in the county at the present and can trace their lineage to someone who was here prior to 1914 should contact us.”

Strombo said recognizing people who had family in the county before 1914 and who are still making Mineral County their home deserve recognition. She said it was one final way to celebrate the milestone.

“It’s just a nice thing to do,” Strombo said. “I think people should be honored. This shows a correlation between the early days and today. We are interested in hearing about these families.”
