Silver Valley teens Brandon Stott and Marley Chambers recently traveled to Las Vegas to compete at the WABDL World Powerlifting Championships.

Despite some of the best competition that the sport has to offer, Stott trounced his competition and took first place in his division in both deadlift and bench press.

Chambers took third in deadlift, but she walked away with a first-place finish in the bench press.

Both teens have only been in the sport for a few months, but have found success in the sport.

Stott, a 5-foot-8, 150-pound junior at Kellogg High School, said it started when he and Chambers trained at Silver Valley Fitness in Kellogg.

"We heard about competitive powerlifting from someone up at the gym and I thought it was something we could do well at," said Stott. "So we started to train over the summer, which led up to our first meet in Missoula. We ended up going into the meet and breaking the Idaho state records in bench and deadlift."

After breaking the Idaho record, Stott and Chambers continued to train, this time for the World Championships.

"We trained over the summer for our first meet in Missoula," said Chambers. "After that, we ended up continuing to train which for the meet in Las Vegas. This is something that we've been training for the last four months."

After four months of grueling training, the two traveled to Bally's in Las Vegas, site of the World Championships.

With how many different divisions they had, Chambers noted that they had to wait to compete in the meet.

"We were there for four days and our divisions didn't start until the last day of the competitions," said Chambers. "We had to watch a lot of the other divisions go before we got our chance."

But once they got their chance, they showed their months of training had been worth it.

Stott's first trophy came in bench press, when he lifted 212 pounds in his third attempt. Not only was that good enough for first place, he also broke his Idaho record by 3 pounds.

Stott continued to dominate in his division when he deadlifted 353 pounds, taking home the trophy and breaking the Idaho record in the process.

"I actually didn't hold the deadlift record before the meet, but was able to break it while I was competing down there," said Stott.

Chambers found success in her division as well. Although she didn't break her Idaho records in bench or deadlift, her 145-pound bench press was good enough to walk away with the first-place trophy. She also finished third in the deadlift with a lift of 250 pounds.

While all the training revolves around their own dedication to getting in the gym, Stott and Chambers wanted to express their thanks to Tommy Rahm of Silver Valley Fitness.

"Tommy's been a big help by letting us train in his gym," said Stott. "Sometimes he'd even let us train in there after-hours and he's just been a big help to us."

Chambers added that she wanted to thank her parents.

"They've pushed me to do great and also they helped pay for me to get down to the competition," she said.
