HOPE - Memaloose Island is no longer on the market.
The 13-acre island in Lake Pend Oreille sold on Friday for $4.8 million, according to Tom Puckett, a Realtor at Century 21 RiverStone, the agency which held the listing.
The island's new owner or owners are not being identified.
The island, located off the Hope peninsula, was being listed for sale for $5 million.
The island was previously owned by Lynne K. Sautter, Wendy Freeborn, John Knight Jr., and the Yarnold Trust in Napa, Calif., according to Bonner County Assessor's Office records. Each of them had owned one-fourth of the island since 2010.
The island's total assessed value is listed at $266,826, assessor's records indicate. It has a log cabin and outbuildings. It also has septic, electricity and a drinking water well.
A posting on the Private Islands Online website indicates the island has more than 6,000 feet of waterfront and is forested by old-growth pine. The topography of the island can accommodate a helicopter pad or a float plane landing in a protected cove on the west side of the island, the Private Islands listing said.
The island is sacred to the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, although its name comes from the Chinook Indian Nation and can mean dead, corpse or to die. Local historians believe it was given the name Memaloose by white explorers and settlers.
