COEUR d'ALENE - A 35-minute break after a lightning strike just two minutes into the game only temporarily slowed down the North Idaho College men's soccer team, as the Cardinals did all their scoring in the second half to beat Treasure Valley 4-1 on Tuesday in Northwest Athletic Conference play at Eisenwinter Field.

NIC's Taylor Haman scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute for a 2-1 Cardinal lead. NIC sophomore Brady Ulen, a former Post Falls player, got loose on the right flank, then the moment the defender stepped up to him, he slipped it into the middle of the field to Haman, who put it away.

"Taylor was very composed and turned the ball around three times," Cardinals coach Ken Thompson said. "But we missed some point-blank shots in the first half. It was an unusual game. They were ready to go after the lightning strike; we came out flat."

The Chukars (4-6-1, 3-4-1 NWAC) scored the game's first goal, on a strike by Diego Diaz Sanchez. NIC (9-0-1, 7-0-1) tied the game on a goal by Ulen, who scored on corner kick by Eli Herman. An insurance goal was put away by Ulen in the 76th minute, after his rebound was put away after Herman's strike went off the hands of Treasure Valley goalkeeper Maricio Huerta.

There were eight yellow cards, four on each team.

The Cardinals play at Wenatchee Valley (7-1-2, 6-1-1), which is second in the East division behind NIC, on Friday.

"It should be the biggest game of the year so far," Thompson said. "They play a good brand of soccer."
