Cardinals hit the road

to face Snow, Salt Lake

The North Idaho College volleyball team travels to Utah this weekend, facing Snow College on Friday and concluding the weekend at Salt Lake in Scenic West Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

NIC (8-4, 2-0 SWAC) swept Utah State-Eastern (6-10, 0-2) and Colorado Northwestern (5-13) last week to open conference play. Salt Lake (13-5, 1-0) beat Snow (13-3, 0-1) in their lone conference game of the weekend last Saturday.

NIC returns home to face Southern Idaho (18-1, 2-0) next Saturday.

Chiefs reassign Hamaliuk;

acquire Brooks from Raiders

SPOKANE - The Spokane Chiefs announced that they have reassigned 16-year old defenseman Dalton Hamaliuk to the Leduc Oil Kings of the AMHL.

Hamaliuk played in one game for the Chiefs this season. He played in 35 games for Leduc last season, scoring one goal and four assists while recording 40 penalty minutes.

Spokane acquired 20-year old Calder Brooks from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.

In 144 games, Brooks has scored 26 goals and 42 assists. The 5-foot-11, 191-pound forward has also recorded three goals and three assists in 22 playoff games.

With the roster move, Spokane is now carrying four 20-year-old players and has until the WHL's Oct. 16 deadline to get below the league limit of three.

USA Gymnastics selects Spokane

for Junior Olympic Event in May

Spokane's sports resume just got a boost with USA Gymnastics selecting the Lilac City for its 2015 women's Junior Olympic Level 9 Western Championships, to be held May 8-10, 2015 at the Spokane Convention Center.

With all northwest states competing, gymnasts will be coming from Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Rypien signs financial aid

agreement with Boise State

BOISE - Shadle Park High quarterback Brett Rypien signed a financial aid agreement (FAA) with Boise State, the school announced.

Rypien, who is on pace to graduate in January, plans to begin attending classes at Boise State during the 2015 spring semester.

This season, Rypien has led Shadle Park to a 3-1 record, most recently throwing for 455 yards and six touchdowns in a 47-33 win against Central Valley last Friday to go over the 10,000-yard passing mark for his career. His lone loss came at Lake City on Sept. 19.

Shock assigned three rookies;

defensive back in free agency

SPOKANE - The Spokane Shock were assigned a trio of offensive linemen to begin the free agency period, including local products Steven Forgette and Rico Forbes.

Forgette (6-foot-4 300 pounds), a Eastern Washington product, started in 31 games as an Eagle from 2010-13 despite missing most of the 2011 season due to injury. After redshirting in 2009, Forgette went on to start 14 of 15 games at left guard and earned Big Sky Conference All-Academic honors.

Forbes (6-6, 315) of Washingon State, played his final collegiate season as a Cougar, appearing in 13 games and earning five starts during 2013. Forbes transferred to WSU in January of 2011, but missed his redshirt junior season in 2012 due to a leg injury in fall camp. Prior to Washington State, Forbes played two seasons at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas.

Aleon Calhoun (6-7, 310), from Navarro College, was the 17th ranked offensive tackle in the nation coming out of high school in 2010.

Devon Dace, a 5-11 190 from Missouri-Southern State joins the Shock for his second year as a member of the Arena Football League after playing the 2014 season with the Iowa Barnstormers.

Last season, Dace saw action in 12 games, including three starts on his way to recording 35 total tackles (32 unassisted), with one interception and ten pass break-ups.

Masters swimmers medal

at national championships

Lake City Kroc Masters swimmers Mike Hamm and Gloria Waggoner competed in the U.S. Masters Swimming National Championships held in Santa Clara, Calif.

Hamm (men's 55-59 age group) placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, seventh in the 50 backstroke, 12th in the 100 individual medley and 200 medley, and 13th in the 100 backstroke.

Waggoner (women's 65-69 age group) was third in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke, fourth in the 200 breaststroke, sixth in the 100 individual medley and seventh in the 50 backstroke.

U.S. Masters Swimming offers swim programs for safety, fun, fitness and competition. Adults of all ages and swim abilities are welcome to participate in programs held at the Kroc Aquatic Center.
