Soccer roundup: Bigfork boys spill C-Falls

COLUMBIA FALLS — Four different Bigfork Vikings scored in Thursday afterrnoon’s Northern A conference boys soccer matchup against the Columbia Falls Wildcats, leading the Vikings to a 4-2 victory.
Just five minutes into the match, Bigfork’s Cameron Cantrell put Bigfork on the board, and seven minutes later teammate Kyle Thomson gave the Vikings and early 2-0 lead.
Columbia Falls responded in the 20th minute on a finish from Keenan Jessat, but the celebration was short-lived.
Bigfork’s Shane Rieske scored a minute later for what would prove to be the game-winning goal in a match that saw Bigfork outshoot Columbia Falls 13-7.
“They got a couple early goals,” Wildcats coach Peter Browne said.
“We were down to 13 guys due to injuries and suspensions from previous games, but I have to give credit to our younger guys. They did a great job.”
The Wildcats came out of halftime by scoring their second goal of the match off the foot of Alex Garaate in the 50th minute, but Bigfork’s Tyler Zavala answered eight minutes later to seal the victory for the Vikings.
Wildcats’ keeper Brandon Karberg finished with 10 saves while his counterpart, Kyle Cummings, stopped two shots for Bigfork.

POLSON — Whitefish and Polson played to another tie, this time scoreless, in Northern A action. The two teams battled to a 2-all outcome back on Sept. 16.
It was the first time in O’Brien Byrd’s 12 years of coaching at Whitefish that his Bulldogs finished in a scoreless tie.
“They find a way to frustrate us,” Byrd said of the Polson Pirates.
“They do a great job of getting behind the ball. It threw off our game, plain and simple. Give credit to Polson ... they did it again.”
Whitefish (6-2-2 overall, 4-0-2 league) hosts Bigfork on Tuesday.

MISSOULA — Goals by Colton Becker at 66 minutes and Brandon Purdy at 73 allowed Glacier to rally for a Western AA tie with Big Sky.
Purdy scored the first goal at 47 minutes. He assisted on Becker’s to have a hand in all of the scoring.
Big Sky held a slight edge in shots on goal, 15-12, but led in corner kicks 9-4.
Ryker McIntyre had 14 keeper saves for Glacier.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Celeste Rehbein had 15 keeper saves to help Bigfork notch a scoreless tie in Northern A soccer action with Columbia Falls.
Alyson Gimbel had two keeper saves for Columbia Falls (5-1-3, 4-0-1).
Columbia Falls had 23 shots on goal to just five for Bigfork.
“I thought we started out pretty flat,” Columbia Falls coach Greg Trenerry said. “We weren’t winning enough balls. In the second half, we played pretty good. We came out hard. we just couldn’t finish.”
Trenerry said Bigfork “played really hard.”
Columbia Falls is back in action Saturday at Libby.
Bigfork hosts Whitefish on Tuesday.

POLSON — Sarah Howell scored the first and last goals and Tiara Duford tallied the third score and assisted on the other two as Polson cruised past Whitefish in Northern A play.
Howell put Polson up 1-0 with a goal at the 13-minute mark.
Polson’s next two goals came at 53 and 76 minutes.
Polson outshot Whitefish on goal 9-5.
Kess Nelson had five keeper saves for Whitefish.
“Polson is a great team,” Whitefish coach Wendy Farrens said.
“They caught us sleeping a little today but I don’t want to take anything away from them. They were the better team today. They fought hard.”
Polson and Whitefish tied in their first matchup on Sept. 16, 2-2. Howell had a goal, assisted by Duford, in that contest.
Whitefish hosts Bigfork on Tuesday.

MISSOULA — The Glacier Wolfpack used three first-half goals and a solid defensive performance to hold on against Missoula Big Sky for a Western AA victory.
Carly McDonald needed just one touch off of Cadie Williams’ pass to put the ball in the back of the net, giving Glacier a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the match.
A Big Sky miscue led to an own goal when Glacier’s Lindsay McDonald’s pass was deflected into the net by an Eagle defender, and seven minutes later, McKayle Dennehy assisted Ellie Stevens’ finish, as the Wolfpack went into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Big Sky’s Cassidy Pierce netted two unassisted goals in the second half, her second coming with just two minutes to play.
Although Glacier was outshot 9-6, it held on for a decisive conference victory.
“In the second half we had our chances, but we couldn’t find the net again,” Wolfpack coach Brenden Byrd said.
“Big Sky put us on our heels. We limited them to big long shots and very little break out opportunities.”
The Wolfpack is back on the pitch for a crosstown showdown against Flathead at noon Saturday at Kidsports Complex.
