'Dogs, Schulz nab A girls state golf titles

HAMILTON — Whitefish junior Coral Schulz shot a final round 88 at Hamilton Golf Club on Saturday to beat the rest of the Class A field by four strokes and secure her first state championship. Schulz’s two-round score of 171 also led the Bulldogs to their 17th team state title, their first since 2007.
Schulz equaled the best score of the round with playing partners Morgan O’Neil of Laurel and Sydni Rose of Hamilton shooting 88 in the final round. It was the Schulz’ first round, a tournament-low 83, that was the catalyst for her victory.
O’Neil finished in second shooting 175 and Rose third at 181. Whitefish junior Katie Fyall tied for fourth, shooting 94-90—184.
“The course was playing tough,” Whitefish coach Tim Olson said. “The greens were in great shape, great condition but really speedy. The kids had a tough time figuring out the speeds which made the scores a little higher.”
Schulz, who moved to Whitefish this summer, placed third each of the last two seasons in Class AA while golfing for Helena Capital.
Whitefish finished all four scoring girls all-state, with Malia Morris (96-101—197) tying for eighth and Georgia Donaldson (104-100—204) in 14th. The Bulldogs’ lone golfer outside of the top 15 didn’t fall too far, with Holly Hileman (114-112—226) finishing 32nd.
Whitefish won the team title with a score 756 and was 51 strokes better than second-place Laurel. Frenchtown finished third as a team.
“They did a nice job all the way across the board,” Olson said. “Our seniors really stepped up and played two good rounds. With the way Coral and Katie played it was great.”
Polson’s Peyton Anderson (100-91—191) finished sixth to also place all-state.
The Whitefish boys took home hardware again, though for the fifth straight year it wasn’t the big one. The Bulldogs were able to scrap together a third place finish, falling 33 strokes behind host-team Hamilton. Billings Central finished second at 653. Polson tied for sixth as a team.
“The boys came a long way this year,” Olson said. “We were short that No. 1 guy that could shoot around par that we’re used to having.
“They had to put together two good rounds. They ended up playing well and had a good day today. If you would have told us at the beginning of the year we would take home a trophy from state we’d be happy.”
Whitefish’s Mitch Young (81-79—160) led the local finishers, tying for sixth. Polson’s Carson McDaniel (78-84—162) tied for eighth to also place among the all-state finishers.
Libby’s Jonny Cielak (82-84—166) missed the all-state group by a stroke, finishing tied for 16th. Whitefish’s Cole Turgeon (86-82—168) was tied for 22nd with Columbia Falls’ Gabe Love (85-83—168) and Polson’s Reno Lindesmith (89-79—168). The Bulldogs’ Cody Olson (87-82—169) was one stroke back of that group in 25th.
Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner won medalist honors at the event by six strokes shooting 72-75 for a two-round total of 147. Frenchtown’s Chris Delaney (73-80—153) finished second and Billings Central’s Liam Clancy (78-76—154) was third.
