COEUR d'ALENE - Jerry Louie-McGee got mad. Then he got even.

One play after having a pretty 42-yard touchdown pass to him from Michael Goggin called back because of a penalty - on Louie-McGee, no less - the Lake City senior dashed 47 yards for a touchdown on the next play.

All told, Louie-McGee caught two touchdown passes and ran for two more - some of the scores of the highlight-reel variety - as the Timberwolves defeated Sandpoint 54-25 in nonleague play Friday night.

"I looked at the ref and he looked at me and I swear he gave me a thumbs up," Louie-McGee said of the scoring play that was negated, which began with him flanked to the right, then continued with him streaking down the sideline, catching the pass in stride. "But then he threw a flag and told me I was off and I was disappointed. He said I was not on the line.

"That made me mad," Louie-McGee said. "I said, 'I'm getting my touchdown back.'"

Louie-McGee caught four passes for 147 yards, including touchdown grabs of 50 and 78 yards for Lake City (5-1). He rushed seven times for 134 yards, including TD runs of 47 and 58 yards.

"I just catch the ball and I run," Louie-McGee explained. "My downfield blockers do it for me, and help me out a lot."

On all four touchdowns, Sandpoint seemingly had Louie-McGee contained. But he used his quickness to slip out of tackles, and his speed to outrun the Bulldogs to the end zone.

"That's part of the scheme, is how many different ways can we get him the football," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "It's a great counter-balance. (Connor) Newby's played really well throughout the whole season, and when they concentrate on Newby, Jerry runs wild, and when they concentrate on Jerry, Newby has success."

Newby rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries, including TD runs of 18 and 37 yards. He also had two of Lake City's three interceptions.

"It was a two-score game a lot of the game. I think the game was closer than the final outcome," Sandpoint coach Satini Puailoa said. "But they've got a couple of special guys (Louie-McGee and Newby), and it's hard to simulate that. He (Louie-McGee) has done that to a lot of people. We had him boxed in a couple of times, and he just takes off. It's good when you've got those guys."

Goggin passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns in the first half for Lake City, and finished 13 of 19 for 313 yards. The Timberwolves totaled 630 yards.

Sandpoint (3-3) hung close early. But in a key sequence early in the second quarter, the Bulldogs had a 42-yard touchdown run by Tyler Harris, that would have closed Lake City's lead to 20-16, called back by a holding penalty. On the next play, backup quarterback Davan Norris was intercepted by Sam Slusser. Lake City tacked on a touchdown late in the half for a 26-10 halftime lead, and led by at least two scores the rest of the way.

Lake City needed just seven plays to score its first three touchdowns. Goggin connected with Colin Hunter on a seam route for a 50-yard score on the second play of the game. Louie-McGee's first TD, a 50-yard catch and run, came three plays after Sandpoint tied it.

Two plays after Newby made a leaping interception in the end zone, Louie-McGee took a short pass from Goggin and sped 78 yards for a 20-7 lead.

"Offensively we performed pretty well, but we shot ourselves in the foot too many times (16 penalties for 94 yards)," Troxel said. "This was a very good win, and coming off last week (a 49-24 loss at Tumwater, Wash.), we needed a very good win. And the three most important ones are in front of us. We were trying to get back on track for the three most important games of the season."

That would be the three 5A Inland Empire League games, which begin next Friday with Lake City at home vs. Post Falls.

“I’ve been very impressed by Zach’s natural ability to rush the passer,” Eck said. “And he’s worked hard on his body, he’s up to about 222 pounds now, and I really think he can be a difference maker for us. He’s still doing some things with the linebackers, but I think his speed can give some offensive linemen problems (as an edge rusher).”

“The whole process has been completely amazing,” said Nathan Williams, now in his fourth season as the Badgers boys basketball coach. “And the parents … it’s an hour and a half to Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, when we’d play an AAU game, and an hour and a half back, and there were so many times there was 6, 8 inches of snow. And we’ve got a game at 8 a.m. They’d always schedule us at 8 a.m., coming from Bonners. So we’re waking up at 5 … it was crazy. But the commitment from the parents and the kids has been amazing.”
