PLUMMER - Multiple law enforcement agencies on Friday were involved in a manhunt for a suspect who allegedly fired shots at officers following a pursuit near Plummer earlier in the day.
The suspect, John D. Crispin, 37, is wanted by U.S. Marshals and has a criminal history including battery, resisting a police officer, firearms violations, aggravated assault, parole violation and open container. No officers were shot during the incident.
Gary Shults, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office's community service officer, said the search for Crispin was suspended late Friday afternoon.
Crispin allegedly fled from Coeur d'Alene Tribal Police and attempted to run over an officer during a traffic stop in the Plummer area around 11:15 a.m. He was driving a white Chevy 1500 pickup.
Authorities say police chased Crispin north on U.S. Highway 95 for several miles until he fired shots at them and fled on foot into a wooded area along the Benewah/Kootenai county line.
Law enforcement agents set up a perimeter and searched inside buildings, but were unable to locate Crispin. Responders lost sight of Crispin in the woods.
The KCSO deployed a K-9 unit in the search. Other agencies involved included the Benewah County Sheriff's Office, FBI and Spokane County. Search helicopters were also used to try to locate Crispin.
Crispin ran from his truck about two miles north of County Line Road, which intersects U.S. 95 between Plummer and Worley.
Crispin is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Those with information are urged to call the Benewah County Sheriff's Office at (208) 245-2555.
