Soccer roundup: Bulldogs rout Bigfork, 11-1

BIGFORK — Whitefish sophomore Haley Nicholson scored five goals and had a pair of assists to lead the Bulldogs (5-4-2 overall, 4-2-1 Northern A) to an 11-1 rout of Northern A foe Bigfork (4-5-2, 1-4-2) on Tuesday.

Nicholson helped on each of Whitefish’s five first-half goals, leading the scoring in the 10th minute on an assist from Julia Houston and assisting on goals to Jess Baldonado and McKayla Stone shortly after. Nicholson finished her hat trick before halftime, adding goals in the 37th and 39th minutes on assists from Anna Peterson.

Baldonado completed her hat trick in the second half and Whitefish got goals from Grace Kurtz and Callie Ling in addition to another two from Nicholson to get to double digits.

“[Nicholson] scored a bunch of goals, that’s her role on the team,” Whitefish coach Wendy Farrens said. “It was a well played game by everyone on the field.”

Katie Thomas scored the lone goal for Bigfork on a penalty kick in the 50th minute. The Valkyries played part of the match a player down after receiving a red card.

Whitefish outshot Bigfork 27-6 and had four corner kicks to the Vals’ two.

Sentinel 6, Flathead 1

MISSOULA — Sentinel (8-0-2) scored the first four goals to take a commanding lead on Flathead (3-3-3) and hold on to its convincing lead in the conference.

Syd Steele had a pair of first half goals and Brittany Delridge bookended the scoring in the ninth and 79th minutes in the Spartans’ win.

Flathead sophomore Hannah Maxwell scored her team’s only goal in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick.

Sentinel outshot Flathead 21-6 in the contest and Bravettes keeper Zoe Zander needed to make 15 saves.

BIGFORK — Kyle Thomson scored a hat trick, including two goals in the first 10 minutes after halftime, to lead Bigfork (6-3-2 overall, 5-1-1 Northern A) to its first ever win over Whitefish (6-3-2, 4-1-2) and hand the Bulldogs their first Northern A conference loss of the season.

“The whole team played outstanding,” Bigfork coach Bill Buxton said. “To be able to get five goals on Whitefish [is great]. They hadn’t given up five goals in conference this season.”

The Vikings pressured Whitefish the entire game, with Thomson the recipient of clean looks from Tyler Zavala and Carson Cantrell. After , Whitefish evened the match on a goal from Jared Johnson in the first half, Zavala handed Bigfork the lead just before the break on a penalty kick.

Zavala and Cantrell each found Thomson after half to give Bigfork the lead for good. Cantrell capped the scoring in the 70th minute on an assist from Thomson.

Scott Marsh, who assisted on Johnson’s first half goal, found the back of the net in the second half to give the Bulldogs a chance at a rally. Sam Heutmaker assisted on the goal.

“It was a well played game,” Buxton said. “We were able to get out in front with that first goal and we built on that momentum throughout the game. We were able to keep that super high intensity up for the full 80 minutes.”

Sentinel 2, Flathead 1

MISSOULA — Sentinel sophomore Austin Leadbetter scored in the 78th minute to break a one-goal tie and lead the Spartans (5-3-2) to a late victory over Flathead (2-7-0).

Kaleb Frame scored on a free kick from 18 yards out in the 63rd minute to even up the score for the Braves, who were out shot 23-10 in the contest. Josh Osborne made 12 saves and nearly earned the point for Flathead before Leadbetter’s goal with less than two minutes remaining.

“Defensively, one of their best performances by far,” Braves coach Dan Ferguson said.

“They had one of the best performances of the season against Glacier last week and they built off that today. They were organized, and they were communicating well against very good Sentinel team.”

Adam Mickelson, who assisted on the game-winner, scored on an assist from Leadbetter late in the first half to hand Sentinel the first lead of the game.
